FAQS: NETWORK INFORMATION

faqs: network information.

how do I access the network?
To access the network at any time, you simply have to press and hold on one of the crystals in your bracelets. You can use either bracelet; a translucent rounded-rectangle will be projected above whichever one you use. Some of our more technologically advanced Wanderers may recognize it as some kind of hologram, but anyone that reaches out to touch it will find that it is oddly solid despite projecting from light. The "screen" is approximately 8 in x 6 in, and you can freely rotate it as long as the center remains over the crystal.

While you are accessing the network, both crystals glow a little brighter than normal. You can activate it by accident if you're leaning on one of your crystals, but the screen will just pop up and await instructions, so nothing can be posted unintentionally. Only you can activate your bracelet; nothing happens if someone else touches the crystals.

what options show up on the "main menu"?
Once you've activated your bracelet, the screen will display the available options for using the network. It essentially works like a touch screen, where you can tap on the option you'd like to use. The current features are:
  • text: starts a text post. A keyboard appears at the bottom of the screen, with an option to set what color you want your text to be.
  • voice: starts an audio post. There is a button to start and stop the recording, as well as one to play it back and/or erase it before posting.
  • video: starts a video post. The screen projects your image as you record so you can see yourself, and also allows you to play it back and/or erase it before posting.
  • alert: sends an emergency broadcast to all network users. This only allows for a live video feed, since the idea is urgency, and all bracelets activate at once to broadcast the message.
  • access: opens the network feed. The screen displays recent posts in descending order, similar to any social media feed. You can only see posts that are publicly visible, or those that have been filtered for your view.
  • directory: a list of every Wanderer that is connected to the network. Given names are shown and attached to all content posted from your bracelet; this cannot be changed or modified. The list is spontaneously updated, meaning it can be used to track who is/isn't in Asgard.
  • other: opens the menu of additional features that have been added to the bracelets.

what are my options for posting?
Anytime you go to create a new post, you will be given the following options:

who
  • direct: sends your message directly to one other user. This is what IC contact posts should be used for, and everyone should have one in their character's journal.
  • group: filters your message to a specific group of people. Only members of that group can see your content, and they can see each other's replies to your post.
  • all: submits your post to the general network. Everyone can see these posts in their feed, and anyone can respond to any content on that post (eg. threadjacking).
when
  • post manually: allows you to review your post before choosing to submit it.
  • broadcast live: uploads your content to the network in real-time, creating a live feed.

what do the posts actually look like?
Almost exactly the way they appear here on Dreamwidth. The original poster's content will be on top and all responses will be listed below it. Responding to a comment creates a thread for all subsequent replies. All content you post has your given name attached to it; you cannot create a username or lie about your name, and there is currently no anonymous function. Once something has been posted, it cannot be edited, including both posts and comments.

can I make a specific thread on a post private?
Technically, no. You create your filter when you submit the post; that filter determines who can see your post, and they can see everything on it. For example, if your post is public, then every Wanderer can see every comment submitted and is able to reply themselves. However, you can mark a thread on a post as "private", and it will imply that you contacted that user directly to discuss the content of the post without having to take your thread to an IC inbox post. The same would apply if you wanted to filter that thread to a specific group of people, as long as you mark which character(s) can view the thread.

what's the range on the network?
Right now, the network start fizzle out about a mile outside of the city, which is currently dense wildlife. The connection starts to get a little fuzzy almost immediately after you leave the developed area of the city and enter the forest, but it will continue to work up until that mile boundary. There may be patches of the forest where the connection is worse than others as well, and some plantlife might even have an effect on it. This is something you can play with at will - the idea is that everything gets a little weird as soon as you enter the forest.

can people see what I have on my screen?
They can only see it if you want them to see it. By default, another Wanderer's screen will look blurry and indecipherable, like your eyes just can't focus on it to see what's there. But if you want someone to be able to see it, it immediately becomes clearly visible to them. This ties into the broad concept that all magic in this world is powered by intent. Your bracelet will respond to what you want it to do.

is there anything else the bracelets can do?
The following features have been added by request:
main menu
music: accesses a fixed catalog of songs. A standard media player opens at the bottom of your bracelet's display with the name of the song currently playing until dismissed. You can find a reference list of songs that may be available here, and a Spotify playlist here. Added by request of Peter Quill, September 2019.
capture: allows you to capture a recording, whether it's a picture, a video, a voice log, or a written document. Files are stored locally on your bracelet and can be sent to other active bracelets. Added by request of Rhys Strongfork, November 2019.
map: An updating, magic map that showcases the district boundaries of Asgard. Added as of January 2020 after the second expedition outside of the city.
The Wanderers are free to make suggestions/requests for the gods to upgrade the network. For instance, the "alert" function was included in the creation of the network due to the Game of Thrones cast collaborating with the gods on emergency planning. The ability to change the color of your text posts was added because the Homestuck cast asked for it. As with anything else in this game, your character can always ask a god and see what happens! You can also leave ideas for us on the plot request/suggestions page.
